How did “sustainability” in design become a dirty word?

5 things you can do now

Presented by Authentic Design Alliance and Design Made podcast for Melbourne Design Week 2026.

Generously hosted by Artbank and supported by Cultivated with ADA cofounder Cult, our panel discussion includes an exclusive guided tour of the RE:BORN exhibition.

The word “sustainability” has lost its way. Once a serious commitment, it has become marketing-speak, and the open door to greenwashing.

So what conversations should we be having instead, and how do we contribute to genuine change?

This moderated panel puts a direct question to designers, specifiers, makers and brands: how much of your work is doing real good for circularity and regenerative outcomes, and how much is performative?

Strip out the “eco” labels, the “sustainable materials palette”, the green photography. What is left? A circular system? A regenerative outcome? Or a story?

We unpack five practical levers: material choices, product stewardship, nature-positive impact, business behaviour, and advocacy. Small actions count. Personal decisions count. The choices you make at the brief count most of all.

All proceeds go to the Authentic Design Alliance advocacy and education program.

Panel:

Aleesha Callahan, founder of ‘About Futures’, a digital magazine platform for sustainable residential design.

Marnie Hawson,  B Corp photographer and Wild Houses founder, who uses business as a tool to amplify nature-positive impact.

Joshua Ellis, Cultivated brand director. A product stewardship specialist, focused on circularity within the furniture industry

Led by:

Anne-Maree Sargeant, Authentic Design Alliance director and Design Made podcast host.

What you will take away:

  • Sharper questions to ask before you specify, recommend or buy a material
  • A clearer view of product stewardship, and what circularity looks like beyond the marketing
  • How to think about nature-positive impact, at any scale of practice
  • A way to talk about your business behaviour without greenwashing or staying silent
  • Practical advocacy you can carry into your next brief, conversation or specification
